Website design software vs. Content Management Software (CMS)

If you plan on building your own website and you don’t already know how to, you’ll probably use software to make it easier. Two of the easiest options are online website design software through your host, or Content Management Software (CMS) such as Drupal, Wordpress, or Joomla.

Online Website Builders
The online website builders offers through web hosts usually have base templates that you can use for the layout of the site, then they tell you where to put in your content. They are very easy to use and are usually supported by the host since the host is offering the software.
Pros: Supported by the host.
Cons: You usually can not take the site with you if you change hosts.

CMS software:
CMS software is usually easy to install at a host and you should be able to do it yourself or the host can often help you. Several CMS software options, such as Drupal and Joomla, are open source so they are free and contantly being improved. They are also very powerful and often have a lot of modules that you can add to make the site even more flexible.
Pros: Increased flexibility, ability to move your site from one host to another
Cons: Not supported by hosts because they are 3rd party software.

Our recommendation is to go with CMS software, the extra flexibility and long term usability far outweighs the ease of the online website builder software.
